The Methodist Church is a member of the MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY coalition which now comprises
over 100 agencies, churches and trade unions. In October 2004, the Methodist Council enthusiastically endorsed MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY
encouraging the Conference of 2005, Districts, Circuits, church communities and the Connexional Team to become fully engaged
in the campaign.
2005 offers an exceptional set of opportunities for the UK to take a lead internationally.
Over
the next 12 months a series of landmark meetings are taking place. These include the UK hosting the G7 Finance Ministers
meeting in February, and the G8 gathering of powerful world leaders as well as holding the presidency of the European Union
(EU).
The British Government and particularly Gordon Brown and Tony Blair, will be influential players on the world
stage.
This means that there is an opportunity to influence them and other world leaders to make the decisions
that could stop an estimated 30,000 people dying needlessly every day, just because they’re poor.
